WAS COMMANDER BRINKMANN, 22 YEAR WILCO VETERAN, FIRED FOR VIOLATING “GENERAL DUTIES” OR SPEAKING UP?

The downfall of Brinkmann:

In 2019, Commander Brinkmann was a 22 year veteran of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Brinkmann was promoted to Commander and had a good relationship with the Sheriff. Or so he thought.

During the investigation on the K9 private text thread on personal cell phones , on March 20, 2019, Brinkmann made a comment in the hallway of the SO, after hours, to Chief Roy Fikac , “How can we fire good deputies and take dogs away from good deputies when “we” the Chain of Command, have a text group talking s***about Chody and Ryle?” This was in reference to a text thread that Cmdr Brinkmann, Cmdr Carter (now fired) Cmdr Deaton and Chief Fikac had where apparently they, like so many others, made unkind remarks about their supervisors, Chody and Ryle. The following day he received received a text from Fikac to report to Ryle. Ryle told him that he was being suspended, and took his badge and keys and car, he escorted him out and wouldn’t let him get his personal belongings.

Two days after making the comment to Fikac, the SO charged Brinkmann with violation of General Duties, “All employees shall work proactively to accomplish the goals, objective’s (sic) and mission of the sheriff (‘s) office as defined by the Sheriff”.

Brinkmann was placed on Administrative Leave, stripped of his badge, keys and car.

Leave without pay two days after making the statement to Fikac

Monday, 8/25/19, just days after making the comment to Fikac, Brinkmann was fired.

He was only told that the sheriff had “lost confidence” in him. An IA investigation was never conducted. Commander Carter was eventually fired as well. Deaton and Fikac remain untouched. We have to wonder, since it has been reported, does the sheriff have a “duty to investigate” the text thread discussing command staff?
